佐藤恭子(サックス奏者・作編曲家)

兵庫県姫路市出身。横浜国立大学在学中にアルトサックスとジャズを始め、横国大モダンジャズ研究会と早稲田大学ハイソサエティーオーケストラで活動。バークリー音大から授業料の奨学金、ロータリー財団から生活費の奨学金を得て、ボストンのバークリー音楽大学に留学。バークリー音大では、ジャズ作曲科を専攻、演奏家、作編曲家としてアワード受賞。卒業後はボストンとニューヨークで活動ののち、東京に拠点を移す。

日本では鈴木良雄(b)グループや宮之上貴昭(g)との共演からキャリアをスタート、演奏家として自己のグループや、作編曲家として「佐藤恭子リトルオーケストラ」を主宰、アルバム「Momentary」「Everlasting」ダブルリリース、スタンダードソングプロジェクトアルバム「Love Songs」など、海外の作編曲家たちと「Brilliant Corners」プロジェクト、クラブDJとのコラボレーション「Nation Of Multiverse」（彼女の作曲によりマンデイ満ちるが歌う「Butterfly」は英国のDJジャイルス・ピーターソンが取り上げるなど話題となった）、企業CM等の映像音楽の作編曲や（楽天生命、JFE製鉄、住友不動産、映画「ペコロスに会いにいく」、作家辻仁成氏の映像作品、小学館、他）テレビ・ドラマ録音では主にゲイリー芦屋氏、佐藤和郎氏をはじめとした劇伴作家による音楽の録音・演奏（日テレ、TBS、NHK他）、海外の音楽家たちとの交流、「江戸川ジュニアビッグバンドアカデミー」音楽監督や、日本の大学のビッグビッグバンドやジャズオーケストラに楽曲委嘱及びワークショップを行うなど、教育家として後進の育成など、活動は多岐にわたる。

コロナ禍ではヨーロッパのミュージシャンたちとリモートプロジェクトを行い、2023年はデンマークのパワートリオ「Kemaca Kinetics」と日本およびヨーロッパツアーで演奏、また、デンマークのアーティストレジデンスに一ヶ月滞在し、ヨーロッパ10カ国以上からジャズを志す子供たが集まるオープンサマーキャンプに講師として参加。2023年秋には、スペインのピアニスト、モイセス・サンチェス氏とスペイン大使館でコンサートを行う。2024年3月はオランダの新進気鋭の若手ミュージシャンたちを招聘して日本ツアーを行うなど、ヨーロッパのミュージシャンとの交流も多い。

2024年4月、「JAZZ ETUDES」を執筆、出版。

Kyoko Satoh

(jazz saxophonist, composer/arranger)

Born in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, she embarked on her journey with the alto saxophone and jazz during her studies at Yokohama National University. Actively engaged in the YNU Modern Jazz Research Society and Waseda University High Society Orchestra, she honed her skills. She received two scholarships (tuition from Berklee College of Music and a living stipend from The Rotary Foundation) that led her to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Specializing in jazz composition at Berklee, she garnered awards as both a performer and arranger. Following her graduation, she made waves in Boston and New York before establishing her base in Tokyo. In Japan, she kickstarted her career through collaborations with luminaries like Yoshio Suzuki (bass) and Yoshiaki Miyanoue (guitar). As a performer, she led her own groups, while as an arranger and composer, she helmed the “Kyoko Satoh and her Little Orchestra,” releasing the albums “Momentary” and “Everlasting” simultaneously. Her involvement in projects like “Brilliant Corners” with overseas arrangers and collaborations with club DJs on projects like “Nation of Multiverse,” where her composition “Butterfly,” sung by Monday Michiru, caught the attention of UK DJ Gilles Peterson, further solidified her reputation.

Her repertoire expanded to encompass composing and arranging music for visual media such as corporate commercials (for companies like Rakuten Life, JFE Steel, Sumitomo Realty, and the movie “Going to Meet the Pecoross”), as well as television dramas, primarily recording and performing music by soundtrack composers like Gary Ashiya and Kazuo Sato (for networks such as NTV, TBS, NHK, among others). She also fostered musical exchange with international artists, served as the musical director for the Edogawa Junior Big Band Academy, and conducted workshops and commissioned compositions for big bands and jazz orchestras at Japanese universities.

Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, she engaged in remote collaborations with European musicians. In 2023, she toured Japan and Europe with the Danish power trio “Kemaca Kinetics” and spent a month in residence at an artist residency in Denmark, participating as a instructor in an open summer camp where children from over 10 European countries gathered to pursue jazz. In the fall of 2023, she performed a concert with Spanish pianist Moisés Sánchez at the Spanish Embassy. In March 2024, she embarked on a Japan tour with emerging young musicians from the Netherlands, fostering yet more exchanges with European musicians.

In April 2024, she authored and published “JAZZ ETUDES,” marking another milestone in her illustrious career.
